Three Year Leaving Certificate Programme

Introduction
In order to fulfil the requirements of the Department of Education, there must be a period of at least two years between the candidates completion of Transition Year or the Junior cycle, whichever is the later, and the sitting of the Leaving Cetificate.

Therefore, students who wish to sit a subject at the end of 5th Year for matriculation purposes (ordinary level English, Irish, Maths, French or German) are not allowed to do so. However, at Hewitt College, we have introduced a unique 3-Year Leaving Certificate programme incorporating a step year, in order to facilitate students wishing to do so.

Aims:
- To enable students to complete matriculation subjects by the end of 5th year leaving them free to concentrate on their best subjects in 6th year to maximise their points potential.
- To grant students access to a greater range of subjects to be sat at Leaving Certificate level.
- To allow students to sit as many higher level subjects as possible.
- To provide students with the opportunity to gain experience of the examination arena.
- To facilitate each individual's growth and development.

Year 1 - Step Year:
The primary aim of this one year course is to allow the students time to mature, while laying an excellent foundation for their Leaving Certificate.
- Students study six /seven subjects, including Ordinary level subjects to be taken at the end of year two.
- Students wishing to participate in sporting activities may attend the Leeside Leisure facility for an hour per day (subject to an extra charge).

Year 2 - 5th Year:
This will be the most demanding year of the three year cycle, as students will be sitting their weaker subjects, which are required for matriculation purposes, in addition to their full range of Leaving Certificate subjects.
- Students study 8 / 9 subjects including the ordinary level subjects to be taken at the end of this year. However, six of those subjects will have been extensively covered in year one, thereby easing the workload.
- A school tour will take place to a European location at Easter.

Year 3 - 6th Year:
At Hewitt College we aim to make this demanding year as stress free as possible for the student. Having fulfilled matriculation requirements in the non-preferred subjects, the student is free to focus on their point scoring subjects.
